FAQs

  • At Humani, we strive to teach you to connect to your body. Our teachers focus on helping you become aware of your day to day patterns, so together, we can help you build a strong, functional, and capable body to reach your own goals. In designing our classes, we pay special attention to alignment and body mechanics to support the health of the spine, then we layer on the fun – exciting movement combinations on Pilates machines to give you a full body workout.

  • Class levels give you an opportunity to develop both movement skills and confidence, and ensure that you’re always safe and getting stronger and learning more about your body. Each class level teaches and challenges a specific functional movement goal. It also allows our students to know what to expect in the class and select the kind of pace and practice that is appropriate for them.

  • If this sounds a lot like you, you will enjoy Humani:

You want a workout that is challenging but feels good.

You want to mobilize and strengthen your muscles and joints and improve how you feel in your day to day activities.

You want to find a strength training practice that also helps you build agility.

You feel energized and motivated in a group environment, but want to make sure your form is serving you and the teacher is there to support you.

If you are new to Humani and prefer a one-on-one setting, are injured, or dealing with constant aches and pains, group classes may not be right for you. We’d be happy to talk to you about scheduling a private session.

  • Yes, you will. If you have never done Pilates on the equipment, we will walk you through everything you need to know in our Machines 101 class. Sign up for this one early because we keep the group small. We’ve watched many students who have never done Pilates comfortably progress. We’re confident that between the Machines 101 class, our Level 1 classes, or private training, you will find an option that allows you to begin.

  • Visit our new to Humani page for more info about getting started, and read the class descriptions to learn everything you need to know about our class options.

  • Yes, they’re fancy, but they have a purpose (plus they are a lot of fun). They were created by Joseph Pilates for a reason. Doing Pilates on equipment can challenge even the most seasoned Pilates student, or support a beginner – it all depends on how you use them. Equipment adds an element of strength training that’s different from using your own bodyweight.

The best part is that the equipment gives you a great point of reference to track your progress – we won’t go into details about springs, but you’ll see what we’re talking about when you start.

  • Pilates keeps the spine healthy, but it depends on your condition. Back pain emerges for a variety of reasons – some can be resolved by Pilates exercises that decompress and strengthen the spine, while some pain manifests because of a serious condition. If you experience pain in your daily life and unsure whether a group class is right for you, please send us an e-mail to schedule@humanistudios.com before signing up for classes.

  • It depends. Pilates can be the perfect companion in getting you back on track after an injury, but it really depends on your specific case. First and foremost, be sure to get clearance to workout from your doctor.

If you are experiencing a high level of pain and discomfort, we do not recommend beginning classes until your pain level subsides and you have been cleared by your doctor or physical therapist.

If you’ve been cleared, send us an e-mail and we will help you decide if our group classes are a right fit for you.

  • Absolutely! We offer a variety of private training options. You can find all of them here.

  • If you don’t see a “sign-up” button on the class schedule, you might be a little early to the party. Registration for all classes opens two week out. That’s 14 days from today’s date. You may also not see the “waitlist” button if the waitlist is full.

  • We do not offer refunds for any classes, private sessions or private events. If you are not able to use your purchased services, we will add the value of your unused service(s) as a credit on your account which may be applied towards retail, gift card purchases, or you may share your services with another student. All purchases are also subject to a price adjustment 365 days after the date of purchase.

  • Short answer is “no”. Unlike, running or cycling, Pilates is not a cardio-based workout. It has many other benefits, but it does not generally bring your you into anaerobic state.

Your practice at Humani will instead strengthen, mobilize, and move the body’s major joints and muscles — especially those that surround the spine, hips, and shoulders. Our strategic layering of exercises will help you become more mobile, stronger, and your nervous system more focused. All of this will help you continue your hobbies like golf, tennis, running, hiking and help alleviate general day to day aches and pains.
